Commonly known as "Handicap" parking, accessible parking spaces provide a safe area for those with disabilities to exit and enter their vehicles. It is important for their safety and accessibility to ensure your parking lot meets the requirements set by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the State of Texas. Below are some FAQs we often answer about accessible parking.
Do I need accessible parking?
If you provide goods or services to the public, then yes, you need accessible "handicap" parking.
How many accessible "handicap" parking spaces do I need?
Below is a breakdown of how many accessible parking spaces are required. Note: the requirements are based on the total number of spaces per lot, not the total number of spaces of an entire site.
What are the size specifications for accessible "handicap" parking spaces?
Car Accessible must be, at minimum:
96" wide with 60" access aisle
Van Accessible must be, at minimum:
132" wide with 60" access aisle OR
96" wide with 96" access aisle
98" of vertical clearance for the space, access aisle, and vehicle route
How should accessible parking spots be marked?
All accessible spaces must include:
The International Symbol of Accessibility painted on the ground
"NO PARKING" painted in any access aisle
Sign displaying the International Symbol of Accessibility AND
Sign stating consequences of illegal parking
Signs must be mounted at least 60" above ground level
